People with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of developing aspergillosis.
This includes individuals:
Undergoing stem cell or organ transplants: These individuals often receive immunosuppressive medications to prevent organ rejection, which can weaken their immune systems and make them susceptible to fungal infections like aspergillosis.
Receiving chemotherapy for cancer:
Chemotherapy can significantly weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of various infections, including aspergillosis.
Living with HIV/AIDS: People with advanced HIV/AIDS may have weakened immune systems, making them more vulnerable to opportunistic infections like aspergillosis
.
Additionally, individuals with certain underlying lung conditions are also at increased risk:
Cystic fibrosis: This genetic condition affects the lungs and makes it difficult to clear mucus, which can create an environment conducive to fungal growth.
Asthma: While less common, severe or poorly controlled asthma can increase the risk of developing allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), an allergic reaction to Aspergillus.
Chronic pulmonary diseases: Conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or tuberculosis can leave lung cavities that can become colonized by Aspergillus, leading to the formation of fungal balls (aspergilloma).

Who is at risk of infection
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
